The purpose of this study was to compare the ability of the SenseWear Pro Armband(TM) (SWA) to accurately estimate the energy expenditure of a commercially available power yoga video as measured by indirect calorimetry |
Twenty-five subjects (12 males, 13 females) volunteered for this study. All participants were between 20--39 years of age, with a body mass index ranging from 18 to 30 kg/m2. Subjects participated in a 45 minute, commercially available power yoga video while wearing the SWA and a portable metabolic unit |
Total mean energy expenditure during the yoga exercise session was computed for indirect calorimetry and the SWA and revealed estimated energy expenditure of 164.0 +/- 32.2 kcals and 164.9 +/- 68.6 kcals, respectively. A one-way analysis of variance revealed no significant differences between the SWA and indirect calorimetry in measurement of energy expenditure, F (1,18), p = 0.931. Therefore, the SWA may be an accurate method for predicting energy expenditure during yoga exercise |
