Women's painting is undergoing a vibrant revival, yet this phenomenon has been little explored. Unframed is a welcome examination of women's contemporary painting, uniquely presenting new writings by both practioners involved with theory and critical theorists engaging with practice. Reflecting on their own painting practice and that of other women painters, contributors also discuss performance, sculpture, installation and video and digital media, refusing traditional categorizations of art based on media. Focusing on current debates on gender, spectatorship, the materiality of paint and the process of painting, this book asserts that women's painting demands close attention if we are at all concerned with current ideas of both art and gender
