Pet ownership has been shown to provide many benefits to individuals both psychologically and physiologically. Many studies have shown the benefits of pet ownership and consequentially the effectiveness of pets in the therapy setting. A large percentage of individuals who may present for therapy will have attachments to pets, therefore further investigation into the subject of pet attachments could provide additional assistance in learning how to better interact with clients engaging in therapeutic services. A better understanding of the role of pets in the family system could also assist in the family therapy process. This study examined the role that pets have in the lives of adults and specifically investigated the correlation of adult attachment patterns with significant others with those attachment patterns that adults form with pets. It specifically examined the role of anxiety and avoidance in adult romantic relationships and how that compared with the level of attachment to one's pet cat or dog
