The following study employs qualitative methodology to explore the impact on cancer patients when they volunteer to teach medical students how to deliver bad news using role plays. There is limited research in this area, but one study indicates that patients in a similar type of program felt challenged and rewarded by their participation (Baer et al., 2008). The current study explores the impact on the patients in more depth
The thirteen participants in this study had all volunteered in the training program run by Facing Cancer Together and Harvard Medical School in February and March of 2011. Their participation in the research was within six weeks of the training program and they ranged in age from 41 to 73 years. It had been at least one year since they received their cancer diagnoses. Each participant completed a demographic questionnaire before being interviewed about their experiences in the training program
The results of this study show that the patient volunteers who participated reported that they were impacted in ways that relate to the following themes: Reminder of Cancer Experiences, Opportunity to Use Cancer Experiences to Help Others, Perceived Impact on Students, Feelings of Fulfillment and Pride, Greater Understanding of Self, Connection to Others, Perspective on Doctors, Performance Concerns, Logistics, and Feedback for Future Training Programs
The data within these themes supports and expands upon the previous research by Baer et al. (2008) because the participants reported feeling both challenged and rewarded by their involvement in the program. All of the participants except one reported that they would be willing to volunteer in the program again. This suggests that they believe that the rewards outweighed the challenges
