Abstract: The Peinan site is located southeast to the foothill of Mt. Peinan and on the bank of the Peinan River. This site is one of the earliest discovered sites in the history of Taiwan archeology. For archeologists in Taiwan, the Peinan site is the first prehistoric site uncovered by large-scaled excavations. It is also the first case of salvage archeology in Taiwan. In 1980, the construction of the new Taitung Station of the South-Link Railway began and the bulldozers resulted in catastrophe of the Peinan site. Archeologists from National Taiwan University were asked to cassy out salvage archaeology this site, and a huge number of artifacts as well as structural remains of houses, walls, stone cellars, slate-slab coffins were uncovered, which have been dated around 3500-2500 B.P.. The Penan site is not only the best preserved prehistoric settlement, but also of the best presentation of the image of the livehood in people's Neolithic period of Taiwan. Sites yield similar archaeological remains have been found widely along the foothills of the Eastern Coastal Range and the terraces of the Eastern Rift Valley. The contents of this group of sites constitute the Peinan culture. The characteristics of the Peinan culture can be revealed from the evidence related to settlement pattern, social structure, craftsmanship, subsistence pattern and burial practice. Among them, jade manufacturing and using are especially noteworthy. A lot of jade artifacts, including earrings, pendants, necklaces, armlets, wristlets, weapons, tools, and other objects were found in the sites of the Peinan culture. Based on various styles and shapes of these jade artifacts, it is obvious that the craftsmanship of jade sculpture in the Peinan culture had developed to a higher level. They manifest a brilliant jade civilization on the east coast of Taiwan, just like a wonderful flower grown from the soil of an island's remote corner. Nowadays, the area of the Peinan culture has been recognized as one of the most important prehistoric jade manufacturing and using centers in East Asia.
