The photolysis of free chlorine was observed under sunlight conditions. Exposure of free chlorine to sunlight takes advantage of the overlap between the absorption spectrum of the hypochlorite ion and the ultraviolet (UV) end of the solar spectrum. This overlap suggests that solar light can possibly initiate the UV/Chlorine advanced oxidation process (AOP) as a replacement for processes driven by UV lamps. Therefore, this study investigated the possibility and feasibility of a solar driven UV/Chlorine AOP. This process was first assessed at the bench-scale using a narrow band (303 nm) representing the lower end of the solar UV region. This solar-driven AOP was first applied to the photobleaching of methylene blue (model compound for organic dyes) and then to the photodegradation of cyclohexanoic acid (simple model compound of the potentially toxic naphthenic acids) at the bench scale and under actual sunlight in Edmonton along with theoretical calculations
