In the present study, the California State University, Fullerton Physical Activity Questionnaire (PAQ) assessed physical activity over 4 days and was tested for validity by comparison with concurrent data obtained from the RT3 RTM accelerometer (RT3RTM) over 4 days and from the Polar heart rate monitor over 2 days in 19 older males, mean age 68.6 +/- 4.6 years, and 20 older females, mean age 74.9 +/- 9.8 years. The PAQ was reasonably accurate when compared with the RT3RTM in assessing moderate intensity activity over 4 days for males, r = 0.63. A statistically significant correlation was also observed in males between the PAQ and Polar heart rate monitor over the first 2 days of the study for the moderate intensity and greater activity index, r = 0.49. Over the first 2 days, the PAQ was also reasonably accurate in assessing total physical activity in males when compared with the RT3RTM, r = 0.50. Gender differences in correlations may be due in part to the greater amount of moderate intensity activity performed by males. The PAQ showed less accuracy when compared with the RT3RTM in its ability to evaluate total physical activity over 4 days in males and females, r = 0.25 and r = -0.33, respectively (p > 0.05). The lack of association observed in total activity may have been due to inaccurate assessment of light intensity activities by the PAQ. Most notably, the PAQ overestimated the amount of light, up and moving in both males and females when compared with the RT3RTM. Conversely, the RT3RTM may not have accurately differentiated between the two indices of light intensity activities recorded by the PAQ. In conclusion, the PAQ demonstrated reasonable accuracy in the assessment of activities of moderate and moderate and greater intensities in males. However, the PAQ demonstrated much less accuracy in its ability to assess total physical activity in males and females
