Non-profit organizational sustainability is a critical weaving of sound business practices and supporting growth in the volunteer membership through leadership, learning, inclusion, and co-operation. This action research inquiry was designed to gather information from Legion members in BC/Yukon Command of The Royal Canadian Legion to better understand the current leadership and training needs of their branch members and continue developing resources that support the volunteer led branch business operations. The research paper includes a review of academic literature relevant to volunteerism in Canada, effective change management practices, and leadership development in an established organizational culture. The study finding demonstrate how shared values and collective voices in a grassroots volunteer workforce systemically influences organizational decision-making practices and can create a climate where change is more readily accepted. This study provides BC/Yukon Command with recommendations which support additional training for volunteers in communication, business accountability practices, and ongoing leadership development
