This qualitative study examines the relationship between institutions of higher education and the field of early education and care (EEC). The study pays special attention to the role that institutions of higher education play in the preparation of early education and care teachers. Three institutions in Massachusetts, which offer EEC teacher preparation programs and are nationally accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), are examined. The study investigates how the programs and institutions are responding to the need to prepare teachers who have the knowledge, skills, and disposition to teach children from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds
