This dissertation thesis uses theoretical and empirical methods to study the allocation of resources in matching markets. The relevant markets include many auction markets, in which prices and allocations are determined, as well as traditional matching markets, in which only allocations are determined. The unifying principle is that heterogeneous items are to be assigned to "positions." In this research, we use the Federal Communication Commission spectrum auction and the college admissions market as important illustrations, but the same principles can also be apply to other markets
