This study examined the development of leadership within a service-learning project in a middle school setting. Attention to developing leadership traits of students by providing an opportunity to work together to help others was the focus of the project. An action research approach was used involving surveys and interviews to gather data. Students were offered the opportunity to organize a major campaign within the community during their own time. Guidance was provided by some staff; however students seriously took the opportunity to lead. Five students were interviewed and asked to reveal their reactions to the project including areas they felt were successful, and suggestions to improve leadership opportunities. Students felt that they were successful in developing leadership skills in a number of areas and expressed a desire to develop these skills further
