Information cannot be ensured of being private in these varying technological trends without proper control. The control must be in terms of communication means, purpose of communication, content exchanged and most importantly identifying whom to communicate with. Networks without controlled access cannot guarantee the security or privacy of stored data, nor can they keep network resources from being exploited by hackers. This study adapts tools like network packet sniffers, security measures like firewall programs, to understand the way data is handled at the network and transport layers. DES cryptographic algorithm is modified and tested during this work. It utilizes Turbo C++ compiler as the application to perform necessary tests. Network security is always the most important issue of any organization running its own sub-network related to their work. DES is modified by using S-P values such that each value appears at most once in the substitution-permutation arrays and the values are considered to be non-repeating. Finally, it is observed that by implementing non-repeating values in incrementing order in each array corresponding positions, it results in generating better or stronger ciphers making the task of attackers hard
