內容簡介

Violence and Community: Law, Space and Identity in the Ancient Eastern Mediterranean World
While there is a voluminous literature on various aspects of violence, law and civic identity in classical antiquity, far less attention has been devoted to the ways in which these three aspects were strongly interrelated. Ideas about the nature of civic identity played a crucial role in determining how the civic community chose to define violence; equally, this nexus between civic identity and violence shaped the ways in which communities chose either to incorporate aspects of violence in their communal institutions or to regulate or proscribe violence through legal enactments or recourse to their institutions. The second aspect of this volume concerns the imposition of law as part of the theoretical definition of the city’s space, as well as its consequences for the perception of civic identity. Various scholars have suggested that territory mattered less in the imaginary conception of ancient cities, in comparison with aspects such as the polity or the nature of government. This volume challenges this assumption and shows the variety of ways in which civic space constituted a fundamental factor that framed the relationship between law, violence and civic identity.
