This research details the development of a small signal model of an high voltage DC (HVDC) terminal and analysis of the HVDC terminal interactions by using small signal techniques. The modeling requirements to adequately represent the dynamics of the HVDC converters and AC networks are investigated. The derived small signal model of the HVDC system is validated against time domain simulations by using an electromagnetic transient simulation program PSCAD/EMTDC and frequency domain analysis by using eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and participation factors. The adequacy of the derived small signal HVDC model with PSCAD/EMTDC model was also analyzed by using Eigenvalues analysis and Prony analysis techniques. The time domain and frequency domain analysis show that the derived small signal HVDC model with constant admittance AC network gives good results at low frequencies (0--2 Hz) and above this frequency range the results are not meaningful. Based on the research results it is recommended that the derived small signal HVDC model must be modeled with the dynamics of the AC network to obtain meaningful results
