The difficulty with contemporary character education programming at the state and federal level is that when these character education programs do exist, they greatly vary without a definite or required curriculum. Even more importantly, there is no effort taken to measure program effectiveness in regard to the perceptions of young adolescents regarding their school's climate or student ability to internalize specific aspects of character education that these programs are intended to impact
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a character education program on the perceptions of young adolescents regarding their school's climate and their ability to internalize loyalty and perseverance. To acquire a multidimensional understanding of the study's topic, a series of pretest and posttests for qualitative and quantitative data were gathered
Conclusions were drawn that this study's findings add to the body of knowledge about character education programs and their impact on student perceptions of school climate, as well as a student's ability to comprehend and internalize concepts such as loyalty and perseverance as good qualities. Furthermore, knowing that student perceptions can be influenced positively by way of schoolwide character education adds to our understanding of the possible effects of a character education program while highlighting the place for such programming within a middle grades curriculum. From this study we can also conclude that the implementation of a character education program can aid in a student's ability to imagine the value and meaning of character traits such as loyalty and perseverance to their life
