520 Perhaps no other network of artists has been more shrouded
in mythology than the Viennese Actionists, a group working
in the postwar and post-fascist period of mid-twentieth
century Austria. This project seeks to open up the
Actionists' oeuvre to a critical reading through an
analysis of Kurt Kren and Otto Muhl's 1964 performance/
film collaboration Mama und Papa, asking what constitutes
"the work." Framing a formal and contextual investigation
with an extensive exploration of issues that circulate in
the discourse of performance art, it looks at the multiple
ways in which the piece participates in a critique of
normativizing regulations in the visual field, depictions
of the body and representations of sex and sexuality
