Using Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory of Nursing as the theoretical framework, this descriptive correlational study examined the relationships among perceived social support, self-care agency, and self-care practices in 41 older community residing adults. Perceived social support was measured by the Social Support Questionnaire, Short Form (Sarason et al., 1987), self-care agency by Denyes (1982) Self-Care Agency Instrument, and self-care practices by the Denyes (1982) Self-Care Practices Instrument. No statistically significant relationship was observed between perceived social support and self-care practices ( r = .03, p = .85). However, the relationships between perceived social support and self-care agency (r = .40, p < .01) and self-care agency and self-care practices ( r = .56, p < .01), were statistically significant. A multiple regression analysis indicated that perceived social support was a significant predictor of self-care agency, (t = 2.75, p = .009) and self-care agency was a significant predictor for self-care practices(t = 4.58, p = .000) |
