This qualitative research study was conducted in conjunction with the Workforce Improvement Project to gain an understanding of the academic needs of the non-traditional nursing students at California State University, Fullerton. There were eighty students who participated who were enrolled in either the RN-BSN or EL-BSN programs at CSUF and all of them were recipients of the Workforce Improvement Project scholarship. Data was collected by nondirective moderation approach that was used to elicit free discussion of the participants during focus groups. The data was then analyzed using data reduction via a content analysis. The emergent themes were organized and tested for trustworthiness using dependability strategies, such as peer examination and code-recode procedures. The findings and emergent themes created a rich description and some initial insight as to what the non-traditional student at CSUF requires in order to successfully complete their degrees
