In this dissertation I examine leadership and sustainability practices in the Sami culture of Northern Scandinavia, Europe's last remaining identified Indigenous population. The Sami people inhabit the Arctic regions of what is now four countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland, and the Kola Peninsula of Russia
This study uses an Indigenous methodology to explore the question of what it means to be Sami and what it means to be a Sami leader in contemporary Sami culture, examining the work and lives of 20 people in a variety of leadership positions in Sapmi (the land of the Sami) today. The research discusses themes related to contemporary Sami culture in terms of: relationship with nature, environmental sustainability, leadership qualities, and modern business practices. The focus of this research is to understand more clearly how Sami leaders think about their relationship with nature and how their understanding translates into work that sustains the environment and promotes harmony with the Earth
Secondarily, the study also explores my personal journey to engage with Sami people through their worldview, disengaging from my own Western-acculturated mind in the process. This part of the research explores themes related to the effect of culturally-induced ways of thinking and acting in the world, particularly in terms of: rational and metaphoric mind; analytic and intuitive ways of knowing; and reductionist and holistic ways of understanding the world
The study offers concluding thoughts on the implications of Sami sustainable leadership practices in terms of the future of global sustainability efforts. Additionally, this dissertation includes a full bibliography of English language texts about Sami culture, including a number of texts written by contemporary Sami authors
