Finnish-Swedish art historian Osvald Sirén (1879-1966) gained international renown as a scholar of Italian art. But when he was almost 40 years old, he was enchanted by the Chinese paintings of Lohans to such an extent that he decided to start his career anew. So he began his voyages to East Asia and left his mark in several fields in Chinese art studies: architecture, sculpture, painting and garden art. This biography of one of the pioneers of Chinese art scholarship in the West will be of interest to anyone with a fascination on Chinese culture and arts and on the history of collecting
