Early intervention has shown to have positive effects on academic performance of students considered to be at risk over time. This mixed methods study focused on demographic characteristics of gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and age on literacy outcomes of pre-kindergarten students as determined by post-test scores, gains/losses, and comparisons of national percentages on the Developing Skills Checklist
A sample of the population of pre-kindergarten students at thirteen elementary school sites in a rural school district participated in this mixed methods study. This study examined ten independent variables at each of the school site by post-test scores, overall gains/losses, and by national percentiles. These variables were investigated within each school in addition to school by school. These mixed methods analysis were performed and then analyzed with triangulation
Findings divulged that performance was significantly different for spring post scores for gender but no significant difference for gains attained for gender. Findings found significant differences in both spring post-test scores and gains of students for ethnicity
Results of socioeconomic status identified by lunch status revealed significant differences in both spring post-test and gain totals. Findings for age found significant differences for the spring post-test additionally in gains of students. Emergent themes within the quantitative analysis supported the quantitative findings with one exception in gender
