Thesis (M.A.)--University of Toronto (Canada), 2009
This is a study which interrogates the language of "new capitalism" through an Institutional Ethnography (IE) perspective employing Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as a method of textual analysis. My thesis combines aspects of CDA's method of textual analysis with an IE perspective to demonstrate how the language of a popular management text, Peter Senge's The Fifth Discipline, ushers in the discourse of the "learning organization" re-organizing organizational agendas across multiple sites and orientating them towards new capitalism. In undertaking a textual analysis from a feminist standpoint, I argue, IE's perspective can make more transparent the "active" nature of texts thus exposing the social relations of power. CDA's methods can reach further into the internal and semantic workings of texts. By combining aspects of IE and CDA I can extend my analysis in two directions - into both social and semantic relations
