The purpose of this study was to examine, from an ergonomic perspective, the reading comprehension of novice readers in a user-centered hypertext, designed with devices that facilitate reading comprehension, according to discourse comprehension and usability theories (Dillon, 2003; Nielsen, 2005; van Dijk & Kintsch, 1983). This study, innovative in Puerto Rico, examined reading comprehension in hypertext with a usability methodology
Findings support what literature on the subject has already stated: that enhanced text coherence and structure facilitate construction of a coherent mental representation, which in this study is equivalent to comprehension. However, findings also suggest that comprehension, and therefore hypertext usability, is improved for novice readers if devices combine enhanced coherence and structure in their design. Novice readers will then use coherence and structure simultaneously to construct a coherent mental representation of the text. This needs to be taken into account by hypertext designers and developers
