In addition to a mandate that teachers use research-based instructional strategies and programs, the No Child Left Behind legislation dictates that all children be taught by "highly qualified" teachers. Effective professional development and knowledge of research methodology are factors that can promote practices which will result in improved student learning. Currently, there is a gap between the university research community and the K-12 community. In this study, 92 of the random sample of 300 central and northern Minnesota teachers returned surveys which addressed professional development and research needs of these teachers. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to garner insights into the needs of K-12 teachers. The results of the study identified facilitators and barriers to effective professional development as well as efficacy of, and interest levels in, a knowledge base of research methodology. In addition, results provided indicators to effect more productive partnerships between the research and K-12 communities
