The purpose of this exploratory study was to provide a description of physiological and behavioral responses to repeated heelsticks and to determine if preterm infants learn to anticipate the noxious stick of the heelstick procedure. Thirteen preterm infants born less than 28 weeks gestational age were observed longitudinally while undergoing heelsticks to determine changes in their pain response. Physiological (heart rate) and behavioral (facial actions) parameters were used as outcomes
Repeated measures analysis of variance showed that preterm infant response was greater on the last observed heelstick during the noxious stick phase. It was hypothesized that if infants increased their response to the touch phase over time, it would suggest that the infant had learned to anticipate the painful stick. Results showed that physiological and behavioral responses decreased on the last heelstick during the touch phase
