This study examined self-perceived leadership skill levels of teens participating in counselor-in-training (CIT) programs at YMCA camps during the summer of 2005. The investigation was conducted to determine the influence of CIT training on leadership skills as perceived by participants in order to provide information that might assist camp directors to improve their leadership training programs. A sample of 27 participants at five different camps was surveyed on three occasions during the summer. Participants completed the first survey prior to attending camp, the second while at camp, and the third and final survey upon returning home from camp. Results of this study indicated that participants felt their ability to get children involved in activities, showing respect for their peers, and being patient increased significantly as a result of the CIT experience
