This dissertation seeks to offer clarity to the term panic by testing multiple conceptual approaches of emergency egress on data representing the behavioral response to the February 20, 2003 Station night club fire in West Warwick, RI. Within the social science study of panic, there have evolved multiple interpretations on what exactly this term represents. These varied conceptualizations of panic have implications for computer simulation modeling of emergency egress behavior. A lack of adequate knowledge of human response to life threatening situations such as a structural fire inhibits the development of models designed to address structural designs and cognitive processes that may aid survival during building evacuation. This dissertation, through a systematic review of data on a real life event where emergency egress occurred, attempts to elucidate the ambiguous concept of panic to aid development of more accurate models of human behavior during emergency egres
