Abstrat:Francis Hutcheson's idea of friendship is a great philosophical elaboration from Schaftesbury's, and intimately referred to communalist sentiment. Despite his dualism in moral philosophy, conceding the co-existence of benevolence and self-love in human nature, Hutcheson held strongly this moralist view of society and friendship to refute Pufendorf's and Mandeville's unsocial sociability. But such a Hutchesonian legacy was to disturb some the greatest minds in the Scottish Enlightenment, such as Adam Ferguson, David Hume and Adam Smith, who inherited Hutcheson's teachings of moral philosophy to a considerable extent, but, on the other hand, duly acknowledged the civilization power of commercial society. Thus, I identify there is a Hutcheson problem, instead of the famed Das Adam Smith problem, for the young generation to debate on.
