This dissertation focuses on the intersections of Indigenous identity and 'island place'---the continuum of land, sea, and life-forces comprising islands---in Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) and Maòhi (French Polynesian) literary and activist texts written during what I refer to as the Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific (NFIP) Era (1970-present). Taking its name from the eponymous Oceanic regional decolonization movement, the NFIP period in Oceania witnesses an upwelling of intertwined social, environmental, and political activism. The prolific Indigenous literary and cultural production that takes place during the NFIP Era plays an integral role in imagining and negotiating the terms of local and regional decolonization. The narratives strategically configure Indigenous identity in relation to two prominent colonial uses of Hawaiì and Te Ao Maòhi (French Polynesia) island place: nuclear/weapons testing and tourism. I analyze activist organization literature and testimony, including the Protect Kahoòlawe Òhana's Kaho 'olawe Aloha Àina newsletter, and Maòhi participation in the health surveys of Hiti Tau and Greenpeace. I also examine texts of influential writers from each region, including Joseph P. Balaz, Rai Chaze, Chantal Spitz, Turo Raapoto, Alani Apio, Haunani-Kay Trask and George Kanahele. The narratives constitute relational spaces which create regional coalitions and which reframe decolonization. Each work recognizes place-based knowledge as central to creating practical, alternative formations of 'sovereignty' and 'national' security inclusive of Non-Native and nonhuman subjectivities
