Recent advances in Internet technology require advanced Web-based tools, such as Image Retrieval Systems, for efficiently accessing images from tremendously large, continuously growing, image collections
The goal of an Image Retrieval System is to retrieve images that are relevant to the user's request from a large image collection. A variety of Image Retrieval Systems, each relying on different approaches, have been developed during the past decade of research. However, many of them focus on improving the retrieval performance on average and disregard the special customization needs of a user, who is the main beneficiary of such a system
The research proposed in this dissertation is concerned with designing and developing an effective and efficient Image Retrieval System from the user perspective, capable to adapt automatically to the user's needs. This adaptation is performed by using a learning framework
We propose several new approaches addressing main research issues in the literature: for retrieval, three new similarity-based retrieval models; for learning, two kernel-based learning methods (Kernel Rocchio and Generalized Kernel Perceptron); for fusion, several kernel-based fusion schemes; for visualization, a new interactive multiple views interface; for benchmarking, a comprehensive evaluation framework including our proposed Image Test Collections; and for kernel type selection, an extensive experimental study. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed approaches improve the performance of the Image Retrieval system
