This quantitative research used alignment, performance, and strategy constructs to address the business management and scholarly uncertainty associated with the effects of allocating resources to align business and Information Technology (IT) strategy. It determined that a positive relationship existed between business to information systems strategic alignment and performance for small banks that possessed each of the three business strategies characterized by the typologies of Defender, Prospector, and Analyzer. The constructs consisted of an alignment assessment that classified strategic alignment according to the attained level of system networked organizational behaviors such as institutionalized communication, control, and flexibility, to measure business to information systems strategic alignment, a subjective performance evaluation, and a strategy construct that determined organizational strategy by mapping behavioral distances to ideal Defender, Prospector, and Analyzer characteristics. The investigation researched the small banking industry. Because the findings support information system resource allocations, it potentially affects management decisions that determine organizational performance. The investigation also validated the alignment instrument, performance construct, and strategy construct. These validations strengthen conclusions derived from previous investigations that used the constructs and support their continued validity for present organizations
